Rambling Session - Ugly Love (05/03/2024)

This morning I lit up a Stolen Throne Cigars Call to Arms Corona while I did some work in the shop this morning. I always enjoy this blend and this morning was no exception.

Alright, so earlier this week I mentioned that I was reading Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover because my wife loved it and asked that I read it. I was happy to give it a try because she wanted me to, even though it is not my cup of tea.

Well I finished it today and I gotta say that while it still wasn’t necessarily my cup of tea (I am not really a fan of the erotic side that these type novels have. Maybe it’s because it was from a female perspective, maybe I am just conservative with my reading) I really enjoyed the book. I found myself taking a little bit to get engaged with the characters, but once I did, I really got into the story line and found myself thinking a lot about it when I wasn’t reading it.

The writing elicited plenty of emotions and was easy to read and digest. I have a small critique in that I thought that there was so much build up for the first 95% of the book while it reached its climax, but then just a drop off of all tension. The climax was more like a cliff. I thought it could have had a few more pages mixed into the ending to ease you back down by maintaining at least some tension.

Anyhow, my favorite part of all of this was how excited it made my wife. I would text her every time I read so we could talk about it, and I could tell she lit up reading the texts. When I would grab the book at home she would smile and run over to sit with me while I read it, sometimes reading along. It was like we had our own little book club.

It’s funny that something so simple can create such a sense of bonding. I guess when life is so busy and full of responsibility and routine it is so easy to forget that just a little thing can brighten your day and make you feel closer to someone.

Take care,

-Trevor
