Rambling Session - Shop Update (07/30/2024)

I didn’t have anything pressing to do this morning, and I really just kind of felt like lying in bed a little longer, so I did. As a result, I don’t have a smoke to report on today. Tomorrow morning I would like to do a review of a German Engineered Cigars blend, but we shall see what tomorrow brings.

A couple weeks ago I finally got tired of effing around with getting color and finish on the guitar body I had been messing with for way too long now. After sanding through some edges on the poly again, I decided to try one more thing and I didn’t like the way it turned out. So I wet sanded it with 500 grit and dropped it at my dad’s shop. I figured at this point I will just have a professional, with the appropriate setup and skills, spray down some black base and lacquer clear.

Again, this was all an experiment on a build that doesn’t have a buyer or deadline, so it is not a big deal. However, I have kind of gotten burned out on the project as a result of all the back and forth. I do think I have a method that would likely get me close and allow me to get a good, solid color finish on a build in the future. However, since that is not really my style, I don’t know that I will be doing it again. I elected to this time since I made some modifications to the body and needed a solid color.

Anyhow, that body should be painted this week sometime. I still have some things I need to do for the neck (tuners and the nut), but I really just was feeling a bit burned out, as I mentioned, and haven’t had the drive to work on it lately. I also haven’t started my next planned build either since I have found I am much better off doing them one at a time.

It doesn’t help that the mornings have been nice out the past couple weeks and I would rather be outside than cooped up in the shop (I can’t open the garage door to get some fresh air since it is under the bedrooms and everyone else is still sleeping at 4:30-5:00 in the morning).

I should work on cleaning some things up to get ready for assembly once the body is back. I’ll get to it when I feel like it, I suppose. I have gotten a lot better about not forcing myself to work on something that isn’t a necessity when I don’t really want to. That makes it too much like a job instead of a glorified hobby.

Take care,

-Trevor

I’m right there with ya on stepping away from a hobby project when frustration sets in. I’ve been piecing together the last bits of a classic Bronco restoration for my son. Some of the supposed simple items have been fighting me tooth and nail. I’ve walked away and returned later who knows how many times at this point. I also have a similar situation in that my master bedroom is above my garage and opening the garage door at an early hour wakes my wife, who is lovely when awoken at such an hour lol. My dog is now enjoying an extra early morning walk on my days off.

Keep up the hobby projects. Mine are starting to stack up and I really need a full shop to complete or accomplish what I still have or want to do.
