I mentioned a few weeks back that I was getting back into golf after a few year hiatus. I never fully stopped, but I went from playing 3-4+ times a month for a few years to once, maybe twice, a year.
I had gotten the bug out of the blue one day probably two months ago, but didn’t have the time to go out. I got a break in the action one Tuesday some weeks back and had the opportunity to go walk 9. It seems I got bit by the bug again. However, I really don’t have time to play much golf or go to the range. I am fortunate, however, to have a couple pastures.
So I have been hitting golf balls in the pastures in the evenings and weekends. Really, for the size of the pastures, I am still pretty restricted to hitting 56 degree wedge shots - at least until I am confident enough in my striking to step back without fear of shanking one into the house or vehicles. I don’t see that really happening though, as it wouldn’t be worth the risk.
Anyhow, I have been figuring some things out and am starting to get my ball striking back - at least to a point. I have finally figured out why I have been thinning my irons like crazy the last couple years and getting more consistent with the improvements.
One of the most enjoyable parts of getting back into golf, and being fortunate enough to have the space to hit balls at home, is that it is a nice activity for my wife and I after we get our daughter down for bed. My wife has never been a golfer, but she has shown some interest and has started hitting some with me. She enjoys it and does a pretty good job for never swinging a club before.
A huge shoutout goes to these glow in the dark golf balls! I mowed a small “green” around a young maple tree as my target area, but it is still a pasture. So if you miss the area, you can have a heck of a time finding your ball. During daylight, it isn’t too bad. However, since the nights are slowly getting shorter and we do most of our hitting after our daughter goes to bed, we don’t get many full daylight swings in.
I ordered a box of those balls and they are just fantastic. Impact triggers the LED to light up inside the ball and they are super bright. If it is already too dark to hit, just whack two of them together and you are good to go! They are super cool to watch fly through the air and they are easy as can be to spot! Be warned, they stay on for 10ish minutes. I have had to scour to find a couple that went out before I could get down to them…
The best part is that they feel and fly true. I was concerned they would be a bit funky, and on mishits they do feel like an old, hard Top-Flite ball. However, when you strike it pure, it feels and flies like a normal, quality ball.
This morning I used them to whack balls while it was still dark out. I was accompanied by a Casdagli Villa Casdagli - always a solid choice.
Take care,
