Rambling Session - Dunk Contest (02/07/2024)

No smoke for me today. Through the week I only smoke in the mornings and this morning I elected to stay in the house instead of going to the garage or outside.

As for what I feel like talking about today - it looks like Jaylen Brown is likely to participate in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest next weekend. This comes as pretty big news since the last time someone participated in the Dunk Contest and the All Star game in the same year was Victor Oladipo in 2018.

It should be known by now that I am a big Jaylen Brown fan. I think he is one of the best two-way players in the league and he catches a lot of flack compared to many other players that are considered superior to him. He is also someone you don’t really want to jump with, especially not this year. He has made some posters already this year, so there is no doubt he has hops.

I’ll be honest though, I am not sure how he’ll do with this. JB is strong and explosive which makes him a great in-game dunker (and would have been fitting in the late 90s, early 2000s contests), but I don’t know if he has the agility or flair for a modern dunking exhibition. That being said, he wouldn’t have thrown his name in the ring if he didn’t have some tricks up his sleeve.

At any rate, I think that this is great for the Dunk Contest and for All Star Weekend. Last year the Dunk Contest got some of the most hype it has in awhile because internet dunking sensation and G-Leaguer Mac McClung was brought in. I don’t think that is what the Dunk Contest needs. It needs the stars of the league to return to action. I think it is more fun and interesting for the fans and for the players.

I hope JB does take part in it. I just also hope he doesn’t underperform and give people more fire power to downplay his abilities.

Take care,

-Trevor
