Rambling Session: Albert Camus (11/14/2024)

I hope you are having a good Thursday.

It is getting to be chilly here in South Central PA. We have been fortunate this year to have a very warm October and November, but I think the cooler weather is here for us.

This morning I knew it would be cold in the shop, so I ended up lying in bed a little longer instead of braving the chilly temps. For that reason, I don’t have a smoke to mention today. I am hoping to get my garage door replaced with an insulated one with good seals. I think that will make things a lot better down there in these chillier temperatures.

So random topic of discussion today:

Yesterday I finished reading The Fall and it has been on my mind. This was the second work from Albert Camus that I have read. I read The Stranger a few months back and absolutely loved it. I know that it is considered an iconic work, but I had some reservations as I had heard it was boring - which I was concerned about because I can get distracted. After reading it I can completely see where people had that impression. The main indifference, I’m sure, did not resonate with many people, and the story really wasn’t that captivating. However, for some reason, it kept me highly engaged to the point I read it in a day (which isn’t impressive given the short length, but it’s the only book I stayed up late in bed to finish).

At any rate, I really enjoyed The Fall as well. In the act of reading, I did not enjoy it as much as The Stranger, but afterwards I realize that it has stuck with me maybe a little bit more than The Stranger. I struggle sometimes with more philosophical novels, as I have trouble grasping some of the context and metaphors. I felt this way while reading The Fall, but it has stuck with me and I keep catching myself analyzing it.

I guess I am drawn to Albert Camus. I certainly want to dig into more of his work. Any recommendations?

Take care,

-Trevor
