Cigar Review: Crowned Heads Cigars Las Calaveras 2024 LC52

Of all the yearly limited releases, the Las Calaveras from Crowned Heads Cigars is one of the most highly anticipated. The release pays homage to those lost the previous year. This cigar is always made at the My Father factory and always comes in 4 sizes - 3 sold in boxes and a fourth added to a sampler box. Historically, in my opinion, this release can be hit or miss, but I always give it try. This morning I am going with the LC52.

This plump looking cigar is actually fairly lightweight, yet firm. The wrapper is on the darker side of brown and has a reddish hue. The cigar doesn’t have much prelight scent, maybe just a touch of sweet earth. The cold draw is about the same. First light is welcomed by a lot of medium bodied smoke. The flavor right off the light is medium at most and is mostly some black pepper, mild earthiness, and maybe a touch of leather. The retrohale, off the bat, amplifies those flavors. About an inch in and the flavor is up to full. The notes are mostly the same with the addition of a subtle citrus sweetness. Hitting the halfway point performance has been flawless. There’s some coffee joining the fray and the retrohale has added some milk chocolate on the finish. Heading into the final third there has been a shift in flavor to deep earth, black pepper, and a bit of meatiness. Coming to an end at just over an hour the flavors remained consistent and the performance was great up to the end.

Overall Experience

So far I have smoked the LC54 and this LC52. I must say, this blend is one of the best Las Calaveras blends I have smoked in the past few years. This LC52 won’t blow you away with complexity or transitions, but it is an overall solid Nicaraguan smoke with perfect performance. I found it to be on the softer side compared to what I experience in cigars from My Father, and I did not mind at all. This blend offers all the wonderful things about Nicaraguan tobacco in a well balanced, great performing smoke.

Have you smoked this one? Let me know your thoughts!
